Install OTA Update on Encrypted OnePlus2 Phone Manually

If you are an owner of a OnePlus(2) phone you might experience issues with the over-the-air (OTA) updates since March 2017 if your phone is encrypted. Once the 1.2GB update has been downloaded the installer tells you “Installation Failed” and you can only reboot. The issue is that your data is encrypted and the installer cannot cope with that. This how to tells you how to install the update manaully. Simply enable developer options on your phone and install Android Studio (or ADB only) on your Windows machine (you will need to adjust the commands in other environments aka Mac/Linux).

  1. Find the OTA ZIP file here
  2. Download the latest verion listed under “Signed flashable zips”. Note, DO NOT use the incremental update
  3. Enable debugging via USB in your developer options on your phone
  4. On your Windows machine navigate to your Download folder and run

C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Android\sdk\platform-tools\adb.exe reboot recovery

  1. Select Install from USB on your phone
  2. On your Windows machine invoke

C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Android\sdk\platform-tools\adb.exe sideload FILE

  1. After everything has been installed select “YES” on your phone (not Reboot)
  2. Select Wipe
  3. Select Wipe Cache (DO NOT select “Wipe Data”!)
  4. Reboot
